REACH is the European regulation on the registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemical substances. It governs the use of hazardous substances in products and requires, for some of them, that their presence be disclosed, the aim being to protect health and the environment.
In the project
REACH concerns the project through the materials and components chosen: a component may contain a substance “of very high concern” whose presence has to be known. On the eco-design side, this can steer a choice towards an alternative. On the safety and quality side, it is recorded as a constraint. In a teaching project, the constraint is cited and the course is pointed to. No full regulatory analysis is carried out.
Regulatory expertise (substance lists, disclosure obligations, articles versus mixtures) belongs to the standards course and to the ESE discipline. This wiki limits itself to flagging what is at stake in the choice of components and materials.
