WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, DEEE in French) is the regulated route for the collection, treatment and recycling of electrical and electronic equipment at end of life, symbolised by the crossed-out wheelie bin printed on products.
In the project
The WEEE directive mainly sheds light on the end of life of a system: thinking about demountability and material separation from the design stage onwards makes recycling easier. It is one angle of eco-design (favouring connectors over solder for anything meant to be replaced, keeping the board modular) rather than a certification constraint for a one-off prototype.
Producer obligations (compliance schemes, collection rates, extended producer responsibility) belong to the standards course and to the ESE discipline. This wiki keeps what they imply for demountable design.
