PPE (personal protective equipment) is the protection worn by a person to guard against the risks of a workstation: goggles, gloves, closed shoes, hearing protection. Each item is matched to a specific risk.

In the project

On a mechatronics project, PPE mainly concerns the manufacturing and workshop phases: goggles when drilling, machining and when milling a PCB; closed shoes in the workshop; long hair tied back near rotating machines; gloves and ventilation for resin or soldering. They are part of the non-negotiable workshop rules (see safety and quality) and are planned as a constraint, with workshop slots and training booked ahead, rather than treated as a last-minute detail.

The exact choice of PPE for each risk and each machine is carried by the workshop and fablab supervisors and by the manufacturing courses. This wiki builds the discipline into the way the project is run.
