**ISO 12100** is the international reference standard for **machinery safety**: it sets out the method for **risk assessment and risk reduction** — identify the hazards, estimate the risks, then reduce them through design, through guards and through user information.

## In the project

A mechatronic system with moving parts is a "machine" in the sense of the standard: the ISO 12100 approach is exactly the one applied when analysing user risks (pinching, stored energy, moving parts) from the [[specification-technique-en|technical specification]] onwards, through an [[amdec-en|AMDEC]], the French acronym for FMEA, or a variant of it. The guiding principle transfers as it stands: **reduce the risk through design first** (hard stops, guards, emergency stop), then through information.

*The full formalism of the standard (categories, performance levels, associated type-B and type-C standards) belongs to the **standards course** and to the ESE discipline. This wiki keeps the risk-analysis approach as applied to the project.*
